The Silk Road and Its Travelers

This project, constructed by a team of students from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in the fall of 2021, aims to enable users to explore the travel and trade routes that connected Europe and China, commonly called the "Silk Roads". For an overview of the Silk Road (or Roads), their history and significance, see our page "What is the Silk Road?"

We invite you to begin your exploration of the Silk Roads by using the interactive map below, created for educational purposes by ESRI using their advanced ArcGIS mapping software. Click on the "Show Contents of Map" button (the square button underneath "Details") at the upper right to turn individual map layers on and off.

As you explore our site further, you will find maps, articles, and other resources that we created ourselves to augment what you can learn here; but this ESRI map makes an excellent starting point.
